CDB may provide $500 million to Tajik central bank

DUSHANBE, July 2, 2015, Asia-Plus — On Wednesday July 1, Head of the National Bank of Tajikistan (NBT) Jamshed Nourmahmadzoda met here with Mr. Lu Tao, Vice-President of the China Development Bank (CDB)’s branch in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR).

According to the NBT press center, the two discussed issues related to providing a long-term loan to Tajik central bank.

In the course of the talks, Mr. Nourmahmadzoda reportedly noted that Tajikistan now needs a long-term $500 million loan to support the balance of international payments, the exchange rate of the national currency, enhancement of energy, agrarian mining sectors and development of small and medium-sized enterprises in the country.

Mr. Lu, for his part, noted that their delegation arrived in Tajikistan to discuss the details of providing the loan to the NBT, the NBT press center said.

The sides reportedly agreed to continue negotiations on this subject in the near future in Beijing.     

The National Bank of Tajikistan is the central bank of Tajikistan.  The Bank is engaged in developing policies to promote financial inclusion and is a member of the Alliance for Financial Inclusion.

The China Development Bank (CDB) is a financial institution in the People”s Republic of China (PRC) led by a cabinet minister level Governor, under the direct jurisdiction of the State Council. As one of three policy banks of the PRC, it is primarily responsible for raising funding for large infrastructure projects.  Established by the Policy Banks Law of 1994, the bank is described as the engine that powers the national government’s economic development policies.  The bank is the second-biggest bond issuer in China after the Ministry of Finance in 2009, accounting for about a quarter of the country’s yuan bonds, and the biggest foreign-currency lender.
