DUSHANBE, September 28, 2015, Asia-Plus – Tajik President Emomali Rahmon yesterday met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit 2015.
According to the Tajik president’s official website, Rahmon noted that Tajikistan is interested in expansion of cooperation with the United Nations.
Mr. Rahmon reportedly expressed gratitude to Mr. Ban for support for Tajikistan’s initiatives within the framework of the United Nations and for humanitarian aid provided to the country’s population affected by natural disasters.
The two sides also discussed issues related to development of the economies of the countries of the region, implementation of regional energy and transportation projects.
Rahmon and Ban reportedly also discussed sustainable development and climate change, including melting glaciers.
Meanwhile UN press center reports that the Secretary-General welcomed the steps taken by Tajikistan to engage with the United Nations on human rights and looked forward to strengthening this cooperation. He also underscored the need to uphold human rights in the fight against terrorism and extremism.
The Secretary-General reportedly welcomed President Rahmon’s leadership in addressing the needs of land-locked developing countries. He commended Tajikistan’s efforts to promote regional cooperation and welcomed its engagement with UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA).
