Tajik president receives UN SGSR for Afghanistan

DUSHANBE, October 14, 2015, Asia-Plus – Tajik President Emomali Rahmon yesterday met here with Mr, Nicolas Haysom, the UN Secretary-General Special Representative (SGSR) and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

According to the Tajik president’s official website, the two sides discussed issues related to state and prospects of further expansion of cooperation between Tajikistan and the United Nations.

Mr. Haysom reportedly supported Tajikistan’s position on settling the political situation in Afghanistan and appreciated Tajikistan’s support for providing peace and stability in Afghanistan and in the Central Asian region.

Rahmon and Haysom also discussed issues of support for reconstruction of Afghanistan’s economy.  Tajik president noted that international community must increase financial and technical support for improvement of the socioeconomic situation in Afghanistan.

The two reportedly also discussed the Central Asia South Asia Electricity Transmission and Trade (Casa-1000) Project, construction of a rail link connecting Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan, as well as trade and transit cooperation between Tajikistan and Afghanistan.

In the course of the talks, President Rahmon noted that Tajik and Afghan power-wielding structures were actively cooperating in combating terrorism and extremism.

Rahmon and Haysom also discussed a number of regional and international issues being of mutual interest, including the fight against terrorism and drug trafficking, and the measures to address modern challenges and threats.

Similar issues were discussed at Mr. Haysom’s meetings with Tajik Security Council Secretary Abdurahim Qahhorov and Tajik Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Aslov that were held on the same day.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) is a political mission established by the Security Council in 2002 at the request of the Government to assist it and the people of Afghanistan in laying the foundations for sustainable peace and development in the country.

On March 16, 2015, the 15-member UN Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2210 (2015), which renewed the mandate of UNAMA and set out the scope and range of activities it is expected to undertake during the coming 12 months.
