Tajik, Azeri aluminum companies to boost bilateral cooperation

DUSHANBE, August 15, Asia-Plus — As it had been reported earlier, nine bilateral documents were signed in Baku on Monday as a result of the Azerbaijani-Tajik summit talks, the main of which is the Political Declaration, signed by the presidents of the two countries, Ilham Aliyev and Emomali Rahmon, who was in Azerbaijan on an official visit on August 13-14.  

The Declaration determines the basic trends and priorities of the development of cooperation between Azerbaijan and Tajikistan, including in the political, economic, cultural, and humanitarian areas, in the framework of international organizations, their interaction in the strengthening of global and regional security.

The parties also signed intergovernmental agreements on free trade, on avoiding double taxation, on cooperation in communications and informatization, in science, technology, in education, as well as in a number of documents at the level of ministries and companies of the two countries.

Abdufattoh Sharifzoda, a spokesman for the Tajik president, said that under a general agreement signed between Tajikistan Aluminum Company (TALCO) and Azeri Aluminum Company DETAL METAL DNCC, TALCO will purchase coke from Azerbaijan supply anodes to Azerbaijan’s DETAL METAL DMCC and Azaluminum in the coming five years.  TALCO, in particular, will provide with anodes a new Azeri aluminum plant that is supposed to be built in Ganja.  Besides, Azeri DETAL METAL DMCC will arrange production of alumina in Tajikistan by Azerbaijan’s technology that will allow increasing production capacities and delivery of anodes.  Tajikistan will also provide DETAL METAL DMCC with caustic soda produced by the Yovon chemical plant. 

Speaking to journalists after the summit talks, President Rahmon note that legal foundation of bilateral agreements between Tajikistan and Azerbaijan allows increase a two-way trade between the two countries to $500 million per year. 

Tajikistan’s president also stressed that the two countries decided to continue regular political contacts and joint efforts to cope with threats and challenges to security. Rahmon said his country “is firmly for peaceful settlement of all conflicts, including the Karabakh conflict.

Tuesday evening, President Rahmon returned to Dushanbe.
