DUSHANBE, October 27, 2010, Asia-Plus — On October 26, Ms. Necia Quast, Deputy Chief of Mission, the U.S. Embassy in Dushanbe, participated in a handover ceremony of approximately $8.9 million in humanitarian aid delivered by Project HOPE to the people of Tajikistan.
The ceremony took place in Shahrinav Central District Hospital.
According to the U.S. Embassy in Dushanbe, the donation, which included $6.2 million dollars of antibiotic, cardiovascular, ophthalmology, and psychiatric medication and $2.7 million in typhoid vaccines, will be distributed to the people of Tajikistan to be used free of charge.
Private U.S. pharmaceutical companies donated the medicine, and Project HOPE organized and orchestrated the transportation and donation of the medicine in cooperation with the U.S. Department of State, Heart to Heart Inc. and the Humanitarian Assistance Program (CHAP). Project HOPE and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Tajikistan will distribute the medical supplies to 14 hospitals and other medical institutions in Tajikistan.
The typhoid vaccines were generously donated by Sanofi at the request of the Ministry of Health. Project HOPE delivered 50,000 doses of the vaccine, which will be distributed to people in Tajikistan’s more remote regions.
This is the third air-delivery made by Project HOPE this year. Since 2002 Project HOPE has provided a total of $242,000,000 worth of medicine and medical supplies to Tajikistan.
