DUSHANBE, August 26, 2010, Asia-Plus — President Emomali Rahmon yesterday attended an official opening of a new residential community for disaster-hit people in the city of Kulob.
Speaking at the settlement-opening ceremony, Rahmon noted that construction of 700 new residential buildings for disaster-hit population had begun after the May devastating floods and 400 houses have already been built to this day. The construction of the remaining 300 houses is nearing completion.
The president also noted that 20 cities and districts of the country have been affected by natural disasters this year and damage caused by those disasters to the country’s economy has been estimated at 2.006 billion somoni.
We will recall the May floods killed more than 20 people, leaving over 200 injured and more than 4,000 displaced from their home in the Kulob zone.
During his stay in Kulob, Rahmon also attended an opening of a new school in the city. 5.2 million somoni have been spent for construction of this school that will accommodate 900 pupils.
