DUSHANBE, August 17, 2010, Asia-Plus  — Outgoing Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) Country for Tajikistan Makoto Ojiro conferred here on Tuesday with President Emomali Rahmon at the end of his tenure to Tajikistan, according to presidential press service.

Tajik leader hailed a fruitful cooperation between the Government of Tajikistan and ADB, which began operations here in 1998 and has enjoyed a stable partnership during the past more than 11 years.

Over the report period, the Bank has provided more than 500 million U.S. dollars to Tajikistan in preferential loans, grants, and technical assistance for implementation of various economic and social projects.

During Mr. Ojiro’s tenure alone (since 2007), Tajikistan has received 240 million U.S. dollars in grants, presidential press service said.

ADB’s main task is to channel financial and technical resources to help Tajikistan improve the overall economic situation, reduce poverty, and rehabilitate infrastructure.  We will recall that for 2010 to 2012, ADB has earmarked public sector investments of $252 million, up 35% on the previous comparable period.  Funding includes two energy projects totaling $142 million, two reform projects of $59 million, and one transport project of $51 million.  Technical assistance of around $5.1 million is planned for the same period.  Financing is currently confined to grants, but an improvement in debt sustainability would allow the country to access loans.
