KHUJAND, February 26, 2010, Asia-Plus — A February 25 meeting of the board of the Sughd regional prosecutor’s office discussed the implementation of president’s decree of November 3, 2009 granting amnesty to an estimated 10,000 prisoners.
As of February 1, 2010, 3,067 prisoners in the province were granted amnesty, Asadullo Urunov, a chief aide to the Sughd prosecutor, said.
According to him, local law enforcement authorities dropped criminal cases instituted against 136 persons and local courts dropped criminal proceedings instituted against 202 persons. 707 prisoners, including 23 women, three minors, 15 men over 55, nine disabled people, two veterans of the Great patriotic War of 1941-1945 and two foreigners, were released, while the remainder was granted partial amnesty (their jail terms were reduced).
We will recall that the amnesty pardons mainly convicts who were under 18 years when they committed their crimes, men and women over 55, and foreign nationals. A special commission has reviewed all the cases to decide which prisoners will be granted an amnesty.
