Electricity supplies in coming winter will be much better, says Tajik official

Date:

DUSHANBE, October 21, 2009, Asia-Plus  — Electricity supplies to residential customers in coming winter will be much better than last year, if any contingency does not happen, Deputy Energy and Industries Minister, Mahmadsharif Haqdodov remarked at a news conference in Dushanbe yesterday.

“Firstly, current water levels at the reservoir powering the Norak hydroelectric power plant (HPP), which accounts for some 70 percent of the overall volume of electricity generated in Tajikistan, are 10.6 meters higher than last year,” said Haqdodov, “Besides, the Sangtuda-1 HPP has been n introduced into operation this year and dozens of small hydropower plants will have been introduced into operation in the country by the end of this year.  Other power plants of Tajikistan are also in a good state.”

However, power supply in the country also depends, to a certain extent, on favorable weather conditions, he added.  “Moreover, neighboring Uzbekistan also play a role of no small importance in the provision of Tajikistan with electricity in the winter period,” said the deputy minister, “Much turns on Turkmen electricity deliveries to Tajikistan via Uzbek power systems.”
