QURGHON TEPPA, July 15, 2009, — A ceremony of handing over 46 new houses to victims of disasters was held in Khatlon’s Khuroson today.

Speaking at the ceremony, Khatlon Governor Ghaybullo Avzalov expressed gratitude to all those who had provided assistance to the disaster victims.

The new residential buildings have been built due to funds provided by the National Bank of Tajikistan (NBT), Tajik state insurance company Tojiksughurta, Tax Committee, administrations of Shahritus and Jomi districts and other regional and district organizations.  The houses are provided with all necessary home electrical appliances and kitchen utensils.

In all, 132 new houses will be constructed for the victim disasters.  71 houses have already been constructed and construction of 61 others is under way.

We will recall that heavy rains and mudflows affected the villages of 18th Partseyzdi Bolo, 18th Partseyzdi Poyon, and Halqajar, in the Ayni jamoat of the Khuroson district on April 20-21, 2009.   According to REACT (Rapid Emergency Assessment and Coordination Team) situation reports for April, 17 dwellings housing 141 people were completely destroyed by mud and 34 dwellings for 236 people were damaged.  1,500 people, from 114 families in all villages have been affected by the mudflows.  The majority of the population barely escaped disaster and had to leave behind all personal belongings, including livestock.  In May, the heavy rains affected 153 houses in the Khuroson district — 88 houses wee destroyed completely and 62 others were damaged partly.
