250 delegates to attend IRP congress due on September 24

DUSHANBE, September 14, 2011, Asia-Plus  — 250 members of the Islamic Revival Party (IRP) has been elected as delegates of the 9th congress of the party that will take place in Dushanbe on September 24, the IRP deputy head Mahmadali Hoit told Asia-Plus today.

According him, one delegate has been allocated for every 300 members of the party.  “68 delegates will represent the IRP organization for Sughd, 76 delegates will represent the IRP organization for Khatlon, 31 delegates will represent districts subordinate to the center, and the IRP organizations in Dushanbe and Gorno Badakhshan will be represented by 10 delegates each,” Hoit said, adding that 13 guests from Russia, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Malaysia have confirmed their participation in the congress.

“Representatives of Tajik political parties and local media have also been invited to attend the congress,” the IRP deputy head stressed.

The congress is expected to review the results of work carried out over the past four years and elect new members of the party board.

Asked about IRP leader’s recent initiative that one person should be elected as party leader not more than twice in a row, Hoit said that that initiative would also be discussed at the congress.

Founded in October 1990, the Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan was registered on December 4, 1991.  It was banned by the Supreme Court in June 1993 and legalized in August 1999.  Its official newspaper is

(Salvation).  According to some sources, IRP now has some 25,000-30,000 members.  It won two seats in the 2010 parliamentary elections.  The Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan is the only Islamic party registered in CIS Central Asia.
