Afghanistan
will depend on the situation in the region, Mr. James Callahan, representative from the United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Regional office for
Central Asia
, told journalists in
Dushanbe
today following a meeting on preventing drug smuggling from
Afghanistan
.
According to him, after transfer of the Tajik-Afghan border under jurisdiction of
Tajikistan
’s border service Tajik special services have tightened fight against drugs.
Mr. Callahan noted that may be certain difficulties had been when Russian troops had withdrawn from the Tajik-Afghan border that had resulted in activization of smuggling of drugs via the border.
“Protection of border requires large financial expenses and we try to assist
Tajikistan
in this direction,” Mr. Callahan said, adding that Tajik border troops and special services need support to stem the flow of drugs from
Afghanistan
and on cooperation with international organizations they will make good success in fighting drug trafficking.
