DUSHANBE, April 10, Asia-Plus – “No country is able to resolve the drug trafficking problem alone,” Abdurrahmon Azimov, head of the defense and public order department of the President’s Executive Office, remarked at a two-day roundtable meeting that open in Dushanbe on April 10.
Experts on cooperation in crossing borders between
Afghanistan
and neighboring countries are taking part in the meeting’s work.
Abdurrahmon Azimov telling the meeting noted that
Tajikistan
’s territory was used for transiting drugs from
Afghanistan
, which accounted for three fourths of drugs produced in the world.
“Drug trafficking is one of sources of financing of international terrorism that undermines stability in the region,” said Azimov, “4.5 tons of drugs, with 2 tons of them being heroin, were seized in Tajikistan at the border last year.”
He also noted more than one ton drugs had been intercepted in
Tajikistan
over the first three months of this year. “The majority of these drugs had been seized at the border,” Tajik official stressed.
In future,
Tajikistan
intends to tighten control of its national border by means of increasing numbers of its border troops, introducing service on the contractual basis and other measures.
