DUSHANBE, September 12, Asia-Plus – Thailand’s Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra arrived in Tajikistan for a short visit on September 9 accompanied by a Thai delegation.
The same day, Shinawatra met with Tajik President Emomali Rahmonov. The meeting focused on establishing bilateral cooperation between the two countries in various economic fields. The two exchanged views on a broad range of issues related to bilateral cooperation a s well as international and regional issues being of mutual interest.
Their meeting was followed by talks between delegations of the two countries. The sides considered a broad range of issues related to trade and economic cooperation, resulting in the signing of a number of documents on bilateral cooperation. Both sides underlined the importance of establishing long-term cooperation in various fields of economy, and agreed to make efforts to achieve this goal, especially in view of the great potential for cooperation in development of tourism, energy, investments, and combating drug trafficking.
After the meeting with President Rahmonov, Thaksin Shinawatra told journalists that a group of Thai experts is supposed to arrive in Tajikistan in October to study the possibility of participation in tourism, energy and aluminum-producing projects.
President Rahmonov noted that Tajikistan intends to study of Thailand’s experience in combating drug trafficking. According to him, the sides will work on drafting a program of cooperation between Tajikistan’s Drug Control Agency and Thailand’s Drug Control Office for 2007-2008.
In their joint statement, Emomali Rahmonov and Thaksin Shinawatra condemned all forms and manifestations of international terrorism and extremism and confirmed readiness to cooperate within international and regional organizations in fighting terrorism and transnational organized crime.
The sides also expressed readiness to sign an agreement on avoiding dual taxation in near future.
