DUSHANBE, November 30, Asia-Plus – The Government of Tajikistan jointly with the international community continue undertaking measures to meet the urgent needs of the affected population after the devastating earthquake, which struck Qumsangir district, Khatlon, on July 29.
According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations (MES), they today received another batch of humanitarian aid for the victims of the Qumsangir quake. A source at a MES said that the aid totaling nearly 48 tons had been provided by Turkey’s International Cooperation Agency (TICA). The assistance includes warm clothing and shoes, blankets, food products and other relief supplies. “They will be sent to Qumsangir today,” the MES source said.
Dushanbe schoolchildren have also made their contribution to help residents of the areas affected by the earthquake. According to Rukhshona Sohibnazarova, a program coordinator at Tajikistan’s National Society of Red Crescent (NSRC), told Asia-Plus that in the near future, children in Qumsangir will receive more than 4,000 items of stationery, school bags and toys collected for them by the Dushanbe schoolchildren.
Two earthquakes hit southern Tajikistan on July 29, killing three children and leveling four villages in Qumsangir. A total of 1,083 houses have been fully damaged and more than 1,500 have been partially damaged.
