DUSHANBE, July 23, 2008, Asia-Plus — As of July 1, 2008, the gold and foreign currency reserves held by Tajikistan”s central bank has amounted to $378 million, Chairman of the National Bank of Tajikistan (NBT) Sharif Rahimzoda announced at a press conference in Dushanbe on July 23.
According to him, the country’s central bank has purchased 371 kilograms of gold over the first six months of this year.
We will recall that as of April 1, 2008, Tajikistan’s gold and foreign currency reserves had amounted to $363 million, and the NBT had purchased 100 kilograms of gold over the first quarter of this year.
“The country’s gold and foreign currency reserves did not change significantly lately, as part of the formed reserves was used for fulfillment of our obligations and liabilities,” Rahimzoda said, noting that the country’s liabilities were reduced by $50 million.
According to him, the country now has gold for some $40 million that has not yet been included to the reserve “as it should undergo the second affinage”
Rahimzoda noted that Tajikistan currently has enough gold and foreign currency reserves to fulfill its obligations and liabilities.
