KHUJAND, September 1, 2008, Asia-Plus — New details emerged today about an August 28 attack on two police officers in the northern city of Isfara, Sughd province.

As it had been reported earlier, unidentified gunmen wounded two police officers in the city of Isfara Thursday evening.

According to the Sughd police directorate, the incident took place near one of shopping centers in Isfara at around 7:45 p.m.

Senior Lieutenant Firouz Olimov, 28, and Lieutenant Jamshed Ahmadov, 22, on a routine patrol spotted two suspicious-looking persons who were carrying a big black bag.  The police officers asked those two persons show their ID cards but they did not obey.  The policemen decided to take them to the police department and got them into the car.

“On the way to the police department, one of detainees took out firearms from the bag and fired upon the police officers,” said the source at the Sughd police directorate.  “The detainees managed to escape; the police officers with serious bullet wounds were taken to the hospital.”  Two cartridges of sub-machine-gun Kalashnikov were found in the car, according to him.

Olimov and Ahmadov are currently in stable health condition.

The Isfara prosecutor’s office has instituted criminal proceedings to investigate into the incident.  Officers from the Sughd law enforcement agencies are continuing an operation to identify and detain the gunmen.
