Tajikistan listed among top ten countries in military spending

yesterday published a list of 10 countries with largest ratio of military expenses in their economies.  

Georgia tops this list with increase of military spending to GDP from 1 percent in 1998 to 5.7 percent in 2007.  According to the newspaper, share of military spending to Georgia’s GDP has increased by 475 percent over report period. 

Georgia is followed by Salvador and Indonesia is ranked third in this list.  

Tajikistan with increase of military spending to GDP from 1.8 percent in 1998 to 3.7 percent in 2007 is ranked ninth in this list.  In Tajikistan, share of the military spending to GDP has increased by 116.7 percent over the same ten-year period.  

In 1998, Tajikistan’s GDP amounted to 1.2 billion US dollars.  It means that military expenses in 1998 amounted to 21.6 million US dollars.  Tajikistan’s GDP for 2007 was 3.712 US dollars; it means that military expenses last year amounted to 144.768 US dollars.
