QURGHON TEPPA, September 10, 2008, Asia-Plus — 268 women from Qurghon Teppa, the capital of the Khatlon province have married foreigners since the beginning of this year, according to the Qurghon Teppa registry office.
Among their chosen ones are citizens of Uzbekistan, Russia, Iran and Afghanistan. However, the number of the de facto unions is higher than the number of officially marriages, according to the source at the Qurghon Teppa registry office.
Speaking in an interview with Asia-Plus, the Qurghon Teppa registry office chairperson, Ms. Marifat Navkarova, said that foreigners get married to Tajik women mainly for registration and dwelling.
According to her, 590 new families have been registered in the city since the beginning of this year, 268 of them have got married for the first time. 44 divorces and 753 newborn babies have been registered in Qurghon Teppa over the report period.
