KHUJAND, September 15, 2008, Asia-Plus — 173 cases of suicide and 45 cases of suicide attempt have been registered in the Sughd province over the first eight months of this year, according to the Sughd police directorate.
Of those committed suicide or suicide attempt, 87 are men, 86 are women and 19 minors, including nine boys and ten girls.
The source at the Sughd police directorate said that 27 of those committed suicide were persons suffering from mental illness. 16 others were motivated by economic problems, 23 persons committed suicide following family problems, and the cause of suicide was unknown in 100 cases.
Over the same eight-month period, eight criminal proceedings have been instituted in northern Tajikistan on the suicide cases.
