Oxfam conducted Round Table on Water Management

Date:

Tajikistan has been experiencing challenges in terms of formulating and amending existing laws and regulations related to water management issues since its independence (1991 AD). Transition period was complicated as the result of changes in political course, civil war, social unrest, widespread poverty and other factors. Currently legislators have more solid experience and capacity for formulating such laws that are relevant to address current problems and to fulfil the national interests for the welfare of its citizens.

To understand the water management issues including legal provisions in Tajikistan In 2007 OGB conducted a research on potable water management in Tajikistan. On 17

th

of September Oxfam GB in Tajikistan (OGB) conducted round table in Kokhi Vahdat for further discussion of the key recommendations and results of the research with participation of the Governmental stakeholders and INGOs. The following questions were envisaged to discuss:

1)       Government as a guarantee for sustainability of the water systems and guarantee for provision of the legal cover

2)       Improved interministerial coordination

3)       Current review of the water sector in the country

4)       Existing legal base

It was obvious that Government as well as INGOs is on the same line in water sector obstacles. It was agreed to appeal to the Government with the fact sheet that describe the current situation in the water sector as well as recommendations from the round table. Also, it was agreed to meet in two-three months and track our achievements.
