DUSHANBE, September 26, 2008, Asia-Plus — Last year, mankind faced a number of interconnected crises — energy; food; climatic and financial that entailed general development crisis, President Emomali Rahmon remarked at general debates of the 63 rd session of the UN General Assembly in York on September 25, according to presidential press service.
According to him, effects of new challenges seriously affected social state of people in developing countries and countries with transition economy, including Tajikistan.
The food crisis had seriously affected the most vulnerable sections of the population. In Tajikistan, the crisis hit two thirds of families, President Rahmon said.
He pointed to the necessity of taking additional measures to prevent further worsening of the situation in the field of food security. “Under these conditions it is inhuman to use food for production of bio fuel,” the Tajik head of state stressed, expressing hope that donor countries will take necessary political, financial and economic steps aimed at preventing further intensification of the food crisis, which might lead to further destitution of millions of people.
According to Rahmon, the right to adequate food is the issue on solution of which lives of millions of people, including women and children, depend.
He noted that this issue requires decisive practical measures rather than long discussions because the food crisis is not less threat than terrorism as it deprives people of human dignity.
“We consider that world’s leading countries should approach to the issue of minimization of effect of the global financial, food and energy crises more responsibly, especially with respect to poor and developing countries, which are feeling effects of these crises most acutely,” Rahmon said.
