KHUJAND, October 6, 2008, Asia-Plus — Compared to last year the number of residents of northern Tajikistan leaving the country in search of better employment opportunities has reduced.
Shuhrat Ahmadov, chief of the branch of the Interior Ministry migration service for the Sughd province, told Asia-Plus on Monday that over the first nine months of this year, 176,763 residents of Sughd, including 137,461 men, 22,769 women and 10,533 minors, have left Tajikistan for other CIS states, primarily Russia, seeking better employment opportunities.
“This number is half the size of the level of the same period in 2007, when 370,146 residents of the province left the country in search of seasonal work,” Ahmadov said.
