DUSHANBE, December 3, 2008, Asia-Plus  — Tajik law enforcement authorities seized some 558 kilograms of hashish and heroin on November 29 in the largest drug haul this year, according to the Ministry of Interior (MoI).

Speaking in an interview with Asia-Plus, Mahmadullo Asadulloyev, a spokesman for a MoA, said that 557.9 kilograms of drugs had been found in a truck ZIL-130 belonging to the GBAO resident Tohir Azizikhonov that was moving from Dushanbe to Khujand, Sughd province.

The totaled included more than 530 kilograms of hashish and 27.8 kilograms of heroin.

Criminal proceedings have been instituted against Tohir Azizkhonov and an investigation is under way.

We will recall that it is the second record amount of drugs sized by Tajik law enforcement agencies this year.  As I had been reported earlier, 517 kilograms of opium and heroin were seized in February.  The stash contained mainly opium as well as about 73 kilos of heroin.  A number of people were arrested during that operation.
