President Rahmon departs for Kazakhstan to attend informal CIS summit

DUSHANBE, December 19, 2008, Asia-Plus  — President Emomali Rahmon is departing for Kazakhstan today to attend an informal meeting of a number of CIS heads of state that will be held at the Kazakh resort town Borovoi (Akmola region), according to presidential press service.

During his two-day stay in Kazakhstan, Emomali Rahmon is also expected to hold a number of bilateral talks with his CIS counterparts. 

In the meantime, Russia’s RIA Novosti cited the Kazakh MFA spokesman Yerzhan Eshikbayev as saying that the meeting is held on an initiative of Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev and heads of state of Armenia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan had been invited to attend the summit.

“The presidents are expected to exchange views on topical issues related to regional cooperation and the global financial crisis, and consider possible measures to counter effects of the global crisis,” Eshikbayev was quoted as saying.  

According to him, the heads of states will also discuss the present situation in the region connected with military-political security and fight against challenges and threats.
