DUSHANBE, April 25, 2009, Asia-Plus — The Community and Basic Health Project (CBHP) has begun distributing food aid to pregnant women and nursing mothers in Sughd and Khatlon provinces this month.
According to the Project representative, 50,000 food packages, each of them contains 3 kilograms of wheat flour, 3 liters of vegetable oil and 3 kilograms of sugar, have been distributed to beneficiaries through local NGOs, community representatives with participation of medical workers.
Besides, the Project will provide all primary health care facilities in the provinces with children’s anthropometric devices that will allow revealing reasons for child’s growth and development inhibition. The Project specialists will train 26 trainers from among physicians working with medical facilities in Sughd and Khatlon for correct operation of the devices and they are expected to instruct 830 medical workers in their provinces.
Since January this year, iron, folic acid and vitamin A preparations had been distributed through medical facilities among 50,000 pregnant women and nursing mothers in Sughd and Khatlon provinces, the source said.
The Community and Basic Health Project for Tajikistan aims to increase access to, utilization of, and patient satisfaction with health services in project-supported areas, and to build capacity and efficiency at national, oblast and rayon levels in administering a basic package of health benefits and introducing financing reforms in primary health care.
