KHOROG, June 18, 2009, Asia-Plus — A delegation of Gorno Badakhshan led by the deputy governor Aziz Giyoyev yesterday met with administrators of Afghan Badakhshan Province in Fayzobod, the capital of Afghan Badakhshan to discuss bilateral cooperation issues.
Speaking in an interview with Asia-Plus, Mr. Giyoyev said that they had discussed the pace of implementation the region-to-region agreement singed by the governors of the two regions in October 2008 as well as issues related to multi-aspect cooperation between Tajikistan’s Gorno Badakhshan and Afghan Badakhshan.
The Afghan delegation in yesterday’s negotiations was led by Alhoj Bozmuhammad Ahmadi, the governor of the Afghan Badakhshan Province.
Bilateral cooperation between the two regions in sectors like agriculture, trade, education, health and culture was the focus of the meeting, Giyoyev said.
The meeting resulted in signing of a protocol supplementing the region-to-region cooperation agreement with exchange of water resources through installing pipeline for development of unused ands along the Panj River and exchange of experience in growing agricultural crops. The protocol also provides for exchange of teaching and medical personnel, acceptance of residents of Afghan Badakhshan for studying at Khorog State University and local vocational-technical schools, as well as permission for Afghan nationals to undergo medical treatment at GBAO’s medical facilities.
According to Giyoyev, the protocol also provides for expansion of cooperation between entrepreneurs of the two regions, intensification of cross-border trade, holding of bilateral fairs in Khorog and Fayzobod as well as exchange of cultural delegations.
