DUSHANBE, July 28, 2009, Asia-Plus — All the nine units of the hydroelectric power station (HPS) Norak are now in good condition, the Norak HPS director Sharifkhon Samiyev remarked at a press conference in Dushanbe on July 27.
According to him, the planned repairs to Units 3 and 4 of the station have been completed. “The water levels at the reservoir powering the station are now at the level of 905 meters above sea level, which is 20 meters higher than last year,” sais Samiyev. “Therefore, we began idle outflows on July 20 and these measures resulting from lack of outlet will probably continue through August.”
“To export surplus electricity to Central Asia’s countries we have to reach an agreement with Uzbekistan, via power systems of which we are connected with other Central Asian states,” said the director, “Negotiations with Uzbek authorities on this subject are under way.”
In the meantime, the head of Barqi Tojik power holding Sanat Rahimov noted that Tajikistan now supplies up to 6 million kWh of electricity to Uzbekistan per day. He added that Tajikistan currently also exports electrical power in small amounts to Afghanistan and Kyrgyzstan.
