DUSHANBE, September 12, 2009, Asia-Plus — The Tajik national somoni, the somoni (TJS), has fallen 27 percent against the dollar (USD) since the beginning of this year, according to the press service of the National Bank of Tajikistan (NBT).
Current exchange rate of the somoni against the dollar in Dushanbe in other regions of the country is 4.45-4.46:1.
Tajikistan saw sharp currency devaluations twice this year: in February and the midsummer. In early February, the somoni fell nearly 5 percent against the dollar, and in the midsummer, TJS fell some 10 percent against USD.
Specialists from Tajik central bank say the plunge in the price of aluminum and cotton as well as decreasing labor migrants’ remittances have caused the situation.
