Water prices rise in Tajikistan

DUSHANBE, September 29, 2009, Asia-Plus  — Tajikistan’s government has approved a 10-14 percent increase in the price of water for apartment buildings starting from September 1 this year.

Shavkat Saidov, a spokesman for the Dushanbe mayor, told Asia-Plus that the price hikes came in response to recommendations of the Ministry of economic Development and Trade (MEDT).

In Dushanbe, the price of water for apartments from the second to the twelfth floor rose from 2.00 somoni per each member of family per month and for apartments from the twelfth floor and above the water price rose to 2.74 somoni.

Residents of dormitories now pay 1.88 somoni per month and private households now pay 1.24 somoni per each member of family per month.

Current prices are 64 dirams per one cubic meter of water for federally funded institutions and 1.59 somoni per one cubic meter of water for other organizations, the spokesman said.
