Japan allocates $479,544 for grass-roots project in Tojikobod

DUSHANBE, October 20, 2009, Asia-Plus  — The Grass-roots Human Security Projects of 479,544 U.S. dollars granted by the Government of Japan, have been successfully implemented in Tojikobod district, eastern Tajikistan.

Today, Mr. Yoshihiro Nakayama, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Japan in Dushanbe, Mr. Makhsum Fozilov, Chairman of Tojikobod District, are attending the handover ceremony for 4 projects to enhance agricultural productivity and 2 social infrastructure projects, under the Grass-roots Human Security Projects, assisted by the Government of Japan.

According to the Japanese Embassy in Dushanbe, the Government of Japan has granted USD76,892 for “The Project for Construction of Greenhouses in Tojikobod District”.  In the framework of the project, three greenhouses have been constructed in the center of the district, Nushor jamoat and Langarishoh jamoat, in order to provide opportunity to cultivate all kinds of vegetables and fruits all year long. The local people will have a chance to consume fresh vegetables at the winter time and sell them in the local market. The project is one of the first introductions of greenhouse technology in this mountainous district.

“The Project for Preparation of the Agriculture Training and Promoting Center in Tojikobod District”, for the total of USD90,070 assists rural people to embark on better income generation with affordable input. Newly constructed training center will bottom up farmers’ agricultural knowledge and techniques which leads to increase the production of agricultural crops and improve the quality.  The center is equipped with the modern laboratory system for various agricultural trainings and seminars.

“The Project for the Construction of the River Bank and the Reclamation of Farm Lands in Kichikzi Village, Nushor Jamoat, Tojikobod District”, for the total of USD84,370, has assisted in reclamation of 10 hectares of land, additional reclamation of 50 hectares is also expected in future.  Under the project, a new dam has been constructed on Surkhob River.  Farmers will be able to control the volume of water intake for their land, through newly installed 3 water pipes and metal gates.

“The Project for the Reconstruction of the Selak Bank in Nushor Jamoat and the Rehabilitation of the Polezak Irrigation Canal in Shirinchashma Jamoat, Tojikobod District”, for the total of USD80,974 aims to protect and support agricultural activities of the population by construction and repair of irrigation canal.  After the rehabilitation of the dam, “Selak”, which was damaged in 1991 by natural disaster and irrigation canal “Polezak”, 40 hectares of land are newly irrigated.  The project will also protect the 50 hectares of agricultural land and residential area from floods and mudflows.  The rehabilitated irrigation system is expected to improve the living conditions of local population of 3,000 by increasing the agricultural production at the newly irrigated land.

As a social infrastructural project, the Government of Japan has allocated USD69,441 for “The Project for the Rehabilitation of the Road between Kichikzi Village and Kamushbek Village, Tojikobod District”.  The project has assisted the rehabilitation of 17km village road, easing the traffic of 3,600 local population and logistic of agricultural products to other part of the district.  The villagers will also have improved access to medical institutions.

Furthermore, “The Project for the Construction of the Water Supply Line between Almalig Village and the West Parts of Tojikobod District”, for the total of USD77,797, has assisted the local population of 2,500 to gain access to drinking water, which reduces the number of infectious diseases.  Before the implementation of the project the local population used to drink water from irrigation canals or flumes which caused infectious diseases such as dysentery and other skin diseases.

The Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP) provides support to projects in the human security sectors at the grassroots level. GGP is provided to local governments, NGOs, and educational and medical institutions in developing countries.  GGP has extended more than US$ 15.2 million for 231 projects in Tajikistan since 1996.
