DUSHANBE, August 19, 2010, Asia-Plus — President Emomali Rahmon met with his Pakistani counterpart, President Asif Ali Zardari, in Sochi on August 18 on sidelines of a quadrilateral meeting of the heads of state of Russia, Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan, according to the Tajik presidential press service.
During the meeting Emomali Rahmon extended condolences to Asif Ali Zardari over the devastating floods that left more than 1,500 dead in Pakistan.
In the course of the talks, the sides reached an agreement on intensification of work of the intergovernmental commission and in this connection, Rahmon suggested developing a long-term program on cooperation between the two countries in the fields of trade, investment, sciences and technologies, culture.
It was noted that more than 3,000 tons of cargo and goods are shipped to Tajikistan from Pakistan every year via the Tajik-Afghan bridge across the Panj River in Nizhny Panj.
The two also expressed interest in construction of power transmission lines as well as highways and rail links connecting Tajikistan and Pakistan via Afghanistan, the press service said.
