DUSHANBE, January 29, 2011, Asia-Plus  — UNFPA CO in Tajikistan jointly with UNDESA presented a national survey on ageing in Tajikistan in Dushanbe on January 27, according to UNFPA CO in Tajikistan.

The survey was conducted in cooperation with the Central Asian Center for Gerontology and the Center for Strategic Studies under the President of Tajikistan and Tajikistan is the first country in Central Asia where the survey on ageing was conducted.

The objective of the survey, which was based on mechanisms developed by the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing, was in getting quantitative and qualitative data about problems faced by elderly people at the national level.

The main aspects of the survey included assessment of social and demographic indicators of ageing, methodologies to conduct a survey, role of elderly people in family, access to health care and other social services for elderly people, as well as determining elderly people’s living standards, the source said, noting that the survey findings will be used for developing policy and national strategies on ageing in Tajikistan.
