Arab world protests caused by political forces driven underground, says known Tajik religious leader

Date:

DUSHANBE, February 22, 2011, Asia-Plus — Known Tajik religious leader Hoji Akbar Turajonzoda considers that allegations by political scientists and medial outlets as well as some politicians that world powers are behind the latest developments in the Arab world are hardly probable.

According to him, no foreign nation could be able to rouse the people against the existing regimes in Arab countries.

“Along with socioeconomic reasons, numerous religious and political organizations driven underground were one of the key factors causing a widespread dissatisfaction in these countries,” Turajonzoda told Asia-Plus in an interview.

“Bans imposed the authorities on religious organizations and restriction of freedom of religion have led to change of political elites in a number of Arab countries,” Turajonzoda said, noting that religious political parties had been banned in Egypt over the past thirty years.  In Tunisia, women were banned from wearing hijab in state offices and numerous mosques have been closed in this country, he added.

Another important reason for latest developments in some Arab countries is deviation from principles of democracy and constant falsifications of the results of elections.  “Flourishing corruption and regionalism in the highest echelons of power and deviation from principles of republican form of government towards monarchy are also among the main reasons for the current situation in the Arab world countries,” Turajonzoda noted.

He stressed that events taking lace in northern Africa must be a lesson to some leaders, who may slant legislation or Constitution in favor of themselves any time under the slogan of democracy.
