China’s minister of public security visits Tajikistan

DUSHANBE, April 25, 2011, Asia-Plus  — President Emomali Rahmon is receiving visiting Minister of Public Security of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), Meng Jianzhu, today.

According to the presidential press service, bilateral cooperation between the two countries in combating international terrorism, extremism and trafficking in weapons and narcotics is expected to be a major topic of the talks.

Meng Jianzhu who has arrived in Tajikistan for a two-day working visit is also scheduled to hold talks with senior police and security officials of Tajikistan.

The Minister of Public Security of the People”s Republic of China is a high level official of the PRC government. The minister is in charge of the Ministry of Public Security of the PRC, which is responsible for law enforcement, public safety and the police force in China. It should not be confused with the Ministry of State Security which is the primary Chinese intelligence and security agency.

Meng Jianzhu was born in July 1947, a native of Suzhou, Jiangsu province.  From 1993 to 1996, Meng was one of the deputy mayors of Shanghai.  In 1996 he was promoted to become the deputy Communist Party secretary of Shanghai, a position he held until 2001.  In 2001, Meng was appointed the Communist Party secretary of Jiangxi province.  He remained in that position until October 28, 2007, when he was transferred to Beijing and appointed the Minister of the Public Security, replacing Zhou Yongkang, who was elevated to become a member of the Politburo Standing Committee.
