Criminal wanted for murder, kidnapping gets jail term of 18 years

Date:

DUSHANBE, August 23, 2011, Asia-Plus – The Supreme Court of Tajikistan has sentenced Boymurod Khojayev to 18 years in prison.  The sentence followed his conviction on charges of murder, banditry, kidnapping and use of violence against police officers, Russian news agency, Novy Region, reports, citing Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB)’s office in Chelyabinsk oblast.

Boymurod Khojayev was detained in Chelyabinsk on April 1, 2010 and he was later extradited to Tajikistan.

Khojayev has been internationally wanted for committing a number of serious crimes in Tajikistan.  He was reportedly also involved in extremist and terrorist activities in the Central Asian region.  According to Novy Region, Khojayev had earlier taken subversive training in Iran and Afghanistan and his name was on the list of persons, probably involved in terrorist acts committed in the Kyrgyz cities of Bishkek and Osh.

“It has been established that Khojayev was involved in the commitment of especially grave crimes in Tajikistan, including murder of Russian military officers, abduction of the deputy chairman of Tajik central bank and murder of the ministry of industry of Tajikistan and four officers from the Vahdat police department,” Novy Region reports.

Boymurod Khojayev had been living in Chelyabinsk oblast under another name since 2004.
