The event was attended by officials from the Ministry of Defense of Tajikistan, the Tajik Military Institute and journalists, alongside members of the Afghan Embassy in Dushanbe and Afghan host families, press release issue dby the British Embassy in Dushanbe said.

Ambassador Robin Ord-Smith said at the event: “This is one of the important elements of our bilateral relationship with Tajikistan.  This language training allows our students to immerse themselves culturally and linguistically in a safe environment, geographically very close to Afghanistan.  All of our students will deploy on operations to Afghanistan in the future and will use the language skills they have gained while carrying out their service in Afghanistan”.

The UK Defense School of Languages trains students in, among other languages, Pashto and Farsi.  Selected students spend 3-4 weeks of their course in Dushanbe.  While here they attend the Military Institute in Dushanbe and an Afghan school.  They also spend time working with both Tajiks and Afghans and learning about culture and life in both countries.  The aim is for them to improve their understanding of the regional culture and their fluency in their chosen language.
