DUSHANBE, July 31, repor2013, Asia-Plus — The tariffs for Internet services have shown downward trend in Tajikistan.

Representatives of the Communications Service under the Government of Tajikistan stated this at a news conference in Dushanbe on July 31.

Compared to last year the tariffs for Internet have slightly decreased and this trend will continue in the future as well, they noted.

The deputy chairperson of the Tajik communications service agency, Ms. Tatiana Kholmurodova, noted that Internet speeds will be raised twice as much in the near future.

She stressed that the Antimonopoly Agency is engaged in the issues of pricing for Internet services.

“We can only check validity of prices offered by the Internet service providers (ISPs),” noted Ms. Kholmurodova.  “Under the country’s legislation, we have the right to inspect activities of ISPs only once in two years.  Besides, we have the right to inspect their activities following applications by subscribers.”

She added that more than twenty Internet service providers now operate in Tajikistan and Babilon, Babilon-T, Telecom Technology and Saturn-Online are Tajikistan’s largest ISPs.

According to data of the communications service agency, the number of Internet users has reached 3.8 million people in Tajikistan.

Meanwhile Wikipedia notes the list of countries by number of Internet users in 2012 ranked Tajikistan with 1,127,193 Internet users (14.5 percent penetration) 115th among 212 countries.  Internet users are persons using the Internet in 2012 from any device, including mobile phones.  Penetration is the percentage of a country”s population that are Internet users.
