DUSHANBE, January 27, 2014, Asia-Plus — Special police unit (OMON) of Interior Ministry’s office for the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (Gorno Badakhshan or GBAO) will consist of local youth and its strength will be increased from 30 to 100 servicemen, the chief of the Interior Ministry’s office for GBAO, Fayzullo Nozimov, told journalists in Khorog, the capital of Gorno Badakhshan on January 27.

According to him, new servicemen will replace the limited group of OMON officers from other regions of the country, who have been temporarily deployed in Khorog since summer 2012.

“The current social and political situation in Khorog has been fully stabilized and there is no necessity for keeping OMON officers from other regions of the country in the city anymore,” Nozimov noted.

The chief of the Interior Ministry’s office for GBAO further added that GBAO police officers were able to maintain public order in Khorog and districts of their region on their own.

According to the GBAO law enforcement authorities, this initiative of the Interior Ministry will promote reducing unemployment among local youth while saving will go to financing strengthening of local police and improvement of conditions of service for local police officers.
