DUSHANBE, September 29, 2015, Asia-Plus – On Monday September 28, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon met in New York with Ms. Helen Clark, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), according to the Tajik president’s official website.
The two reportedly a broad range of issues related to cooperation between Tajikistan and the UNDP as well as the process of implementation of the UNDP-supported projects in Tajikistan.
The sides expressed satisfaction over the adoption of two quite important documents – UN Development Assistance Framework Program for 2016-2020 and Country Program for 2016-2020 which correspond to the current and strategic priorities of Tajikistan and goals of the Government of the country in the domain of sustainable development for the period 15 next years.
They characterized the role of the UNDP in addressing boundary and regional issues related to economic cooperation and ensuring security as very valuable, and especially mentioned about the project “Initiative of Tajikistan and Afghanistan in the Poverty Reduction” for 2010-2012 and three-year project titled “Improvement of Population Wellbeing in the Border Areas of Tajikistan and Afghanistan” as models of the development of border cooperation.
Headquartered in New York City, UNDP advocates for change and connects countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. It provides expert advice, training, and grant support to developing countries, with increasing emphasis on assistance to the least developed countries. The status of UNDP is that of an executive board within the United Nations General Assembly. The UNDP Administrator is the third highest-ranking official of the United Nations after the United Nations Secretary-General and Deputy Secretary-General.
UNDP is funded entirely by voluntary contributions from member nations. The organization has country offices in 177 countries, where it works with local governments to meet development challenges and develop local capacity. Additionally, the UNDP works internationally to help countries achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Currently, the UNDP is one of the main UN agencies involved in the development of the Post-2015 Development Agenda.
UNDP has been on the ground in Tajikistan since 1994.
