DUSHANBE, January 5, 2015, Asia-Plus – Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, who was on an official visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, received in audience the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Mr. Iyad Ameen Madani, in Jeddah on January 4, according to the Tajik president’s official website.
During the audience, Emomali Rahmon and Iyad Ameen Madani had reportedly useful and extensive exchange of views on issues related to promoting bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and the OIC and Tajikistan, the OIC and the challenges facing the Muslim Ummah.
They also discussed ways and means to promote economic development especially in Central Asia and strengthen intra-OIC cooperation.
They expressed concern about instable situation and armed conflicts in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Palestine, Afghanistan and some other Muslim countries.
They also expressed serious concern about spread of terrorism and extremism, aggravation of contradictions between mazhabs, and rise in Islamophobia.
During the meeting, President Rahmon shared his vision on the future of the OIC and highlighted some important priorities including regional peace and security for the Organization to pursue.
The OIC Secretary General reportedly thanked President Rahmon for his vision and expressed the readiness of the OIC to continue its cooperation with Tajikistan to promote solidarity and Joint Islamic Action.
Established on September 25, 1969, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is an international organization consisting of 57 member states. The organization attempts to be the collective voice of the Muslim world and to safeguard the interests and ensure the progress and well-being of its member countries in an atmosphere of international peace. The OIC has a permanent delegation to the United Nations. The official languages of the OIC are Arabic, English and French.
The Organization of the Islamic Cooperation has 57 members, 56 of which are classed by the United Nations as member states. A few countries with significant Muslim populations, such as Russia and Thailand, sit as Observer States, while others, such as India and Ethiopia, are not members.
