An eleven-year-old boy has been killed by an avalanche in Sangvor (formerly Tavildara) district in Rasht Valley (eastern Tajikistan), according to the press center of the Committee on Emergency Situations and Civil Defense (CES) under the Government of Tajikistan.
“The tragedy occurred on February 19. The 11-year-old Khairiddin Ibrohim was killed by the avalanche that hit the village of Rogh,” Ms. Umeda Yusupova, a spokeswoman for CES, told Asia-Plus in an interview.
No other casualties were reported, according to her.
“The household of the Shekhmuradov family was damaged by the avalanche. They have been provided with foods and clothes,” Yusupova said.
CES chief Rustam Nazarzoda yesterday morning flew by helicopter to Sangvor district to closely monitor the situation in the avalanche site. Several avalanches have reportedly hit the Darai Kalp area in Sangvor district this week.
Meanwhile, Radio Liberty’s Tajik Service, citing local police officer Muhammad Safiyev, reported that an avalanche that occurred on February 19 buried three houses in the Kalp village of the Sangvor district. One person was killed and 17 others survived the avalanche, Safiyev was quoted as saying.
