Japan’s government donates snow removal machines to Tajikistan

Japan’s government has donated four snow removal machines to each region of Tajikistan. 

On August 28, 2017, grant signing ceremony for four new projects under Japan’s scheme of “Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP)” was held at the Embassy of Japan in Dushanbe.  The grant contracts were signed by Mr. Tomohiro Nakagaki, Charge d`Affaires ad interim of Japan to Tajikistan and the representatives of the branches of the Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense of Sughd, Khatlon, Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) and districts subordinate to the center.  According to Japan’s Embassy in Dushanbe, the total grant amount is USD 401,820.

Due to the consequences of heavy snow last winter in Tajikistan, the Embassy of Japan in Dushanbe reportedly decided to provide snow removal machines to the Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense in all regions of Tajikistan.  The Government of Japan pays particular attention on the sphere of disaster risk reduction and in that milieu, it supports the Tajik government to cope with natural disasters.

The new GGP projects signed are:

– “The Project for Provision of Snow Removal Machine to Districts of Republican Subordination”, signed with Mr. Suhrob Mahmoudov, Head of the Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense of Districts of Districts Subordinate to the Center with the amount of USD 100,390;

– “The Project for Provision of Snow Removal Machine to Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region”, signed with Mr. Naim Mirakov, Head of the Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense of Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region with the amount of USD 100,590;

– “The Project for Provision of Snow Removal Machine to Khatlon Region”, signed with Mr. Yoqubali Saydaliyev, Deputy Head of the Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense of Khatlon Province with the amount of USD 100,340;

– “The Project for Provision of Snow Removal Machine to Sughd Region”, signed with Mr. Bahrom Dodov, Head of the Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense of Sughd Province with the amount of USD 100,500;

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Mr. Tomohiro Nakagaki wished the beneficiary organizations successful implementation of their projects.  While affirming the friendly relationship between Tajikistan and Japan, Mr. Nakagaki emphasized Japan’s firm commitment to support Tajik people from human security perspective as well as the importance of implementing socioeconomic development projects that will lead to upliftment of the living conditions in rural areas.  Embracing the occasion, the grant recipients explained the significance of their projects and expressed gratitude to the Government and the people of Japan.

Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP) is provided to local governments, educational/ medical institutions and International NGOs in addressing development needs in the areas such as education, health, water supply and the environment.  GGP supports projects in the human security sectors at the grassroots level. As of today, GGP has supported 380 projects in the Republic of Tajikistan, for which more than US$ 30.7 million has been provided since 1996.
