Tajik President Emomali Rahmon met with Mr. Achim Steiner, the Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in New York yesterday on the sidelines of the 72nd Regular Session of the UN General Assembly, according to the Tajik president’s official website.
In the course of the talks, Tajik leader reportedly expressed satisfaction with the current level of cooperation between Tajikistan and UNDP and highly appraised UNDP’s contribution to solution of problems facing Tajikistan.
Mr. Steiner, for his part, highly appraised Tajik leader’s position on implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the president’s website said.
Rahmon and Steiner reportedly exchanged views on a number of issues being of mutual interest, including an active participation in implementation of small and large socioeconomic projects, support for implementation of Tajikistan National Development Strategy 2016–2030, mitigation of natural disaster effects, alleviation of poverty rate in Tajikistan, rehabilitation of vital infrastructure and expansion of collaboration in the field of education, as well as solution of global water and climate change problems.
UNDP supports countries around the world to eradicate extreme poverty, strengthen good governance and prevent and respond to crises.
UNDP works in Tajikistan in partnership with the Government and plays an active part to harmonize the efforts of all the UN agencies active in the country. The development work of the UN agencies in Tajikistan is regulated by the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF).
UNDP’s goal is to support the Government of Tajikistan in the coordination of development initiatives, the public finance management, the delivery of core public services and the planning and decision-making.
