Tajik, Uzbek security services agree to jointly combat international terrorism

Security services of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan have signed an agreement on cooperation in combating international terrorism, controlling border and exchanging information, according to Ferghana.ru.

The document was reportedly inked by Saymumin Yatimov, the chief of the State Committee for National Security (SCNS) of Tajikistan, and Ikhtiyor Abdullayev, the head of the National Security Service (SGB) of Uzbekistan, in Dushanbe on June 12.  

Chief of the National Security Service (SGB) of Uzbekistan, Ikhtiyor Abdullayev, arrived in Dushanbe on Tuesday on a working visit.

While in Tajikistan, SGB chief will also visit the site for construction of the Roghun hydroelectric power plant (HPP) to get acquainted with the progress of construction of the facility.  

Recall, SCNS chief, Saymumin Yatimov, visited Tashkent in April this year at the invitation of his Uzbek counterpart.

The two reportedly discussed  joint efforts to address modern challenges and threats, including transnational crime, terrorism and extremism.  

Meanwhile, Ferghana.ru says SCNS delegation led by General Yatimov visited Kabul in May to discuss issues related to cooperation between Tajikistan and Afghanistan in strengthening border control and combating terrorism and drug trafficking.  

Pakistani news agency Dispatch News Desk (DND) reports that Yatimov heading Tajik delegation on June 7 met in Islamabad  the National Security Adviser (NSA) of Pakistan Lt. General (R) Nasser Khan Janjua. 

The talks reportedly included bilateral relations, matters pertaining to regional security and prospects of connectivity were discussed.

According to an official statement issued by the office of NSA,  Lt. General (R) Nasser Khan Janjua welcomed the guests and thanked them for coming over to Pakistan.  

NSA reportedly gave an elaborate presentation to the delegation highlighting the global and regional environment with focus on common opportunities and challenges for Pakistan and CARs which can help carve a common and better future.  

Stressing the significance of peace and stability in Afghanistan, both sides agreed that a safe and secure Afghanistan will work as a bridge between Pakistan and CARs, according to DND.

Both sides agreed that the relations of the two countries should move in the direction of strategic cooperation in the interest of peace and stability in the region and for enhancing connectivity and economic development.

The State Committee for National Security is the principal national security and intelligence agency of Tajikistan. Its main responsibilities include internal and border security, counter-intelligence, counter-terrorism, counter-narcotics, fighting organized crime, and surveillance. The chairman of the committee and all of his deputies are appointed by and answerable to the president of Tajikistan.  Saymumin Yatimov has served as the SCNS chairman since September 2, 2010.

The National Security Service is the national intelligence agency of the government of Uzbekistan.  It was created as a successor to the KGB following the collapse of the Soviet Union, and retains the same responsibilities and a similar range of functional units, including paramilitary police and special forces.  Ikhtiyor Abdullayev has served as the SGB chief since January 31, 2018.
