The value of the Tajik national currency, the somoni (TJS), has continued to depreciate against the U.S. dollar, registering an average official buying rate (the buying rate is the rate at which money dealers will buy foreign currency) of the dollar against the somoni at 1:10.2489 on April 16, up from 1:20 on April 1.
Over the past month, the somoni has lost nearly 5.3 percent of its value against the U.S. dollar (at the National Bank rate).
In mid-March, the exchange rate of the USD against TJS was 1:9.7. Tajikistan saw the sharp currency devaluation in late March, when an average official buying rate of USD against TJS increased from 1:9.7 to 1:10.20.
The NBT specialists attribute devaluation of the Tajik national currency against the dollar to a negative trade balance, decline in remittances and decrease in supply in the country’s currency market.
