Tajik President, U.S. Central Command Commander discuss regional security

On Thursday October 22, President Emomali Rahmon received General Frank McKenzie, Commander, U.S. Central Command.

According to the Tajik president’s official website, the parties discussed state and prospects of further expansion of bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and the United States, especially in the field of providing regional security and stability and addressing global threats and challenges.

In the cause of the talks, President Rahmon and General McKenzie reportedly also exchanged views on the latest developments in Afghanistan.

In this regard, Tajik leader noted that the situation in the neighboring country was constantly a focus of attention for him and Tajikistan supported regular efforts of the Government of Afghanistan to establish firm peace and stability in the country.     

Meanwhile the U.S. Embassy in Dushanbe says General McKenzie conducted his first visit to Dushanbe yesterday and met with President Emomali Rahmon and senior Ministry of Defense and security officials.

The leaders reportedly discussed areas of mutual concern, including counter terrorism and border security, and ways that the United States and Tajikistan can continue to work together to advance security and stability in the Central Asian region, including in Afghanistan.

The United States and Tajikistan maintain a strong strategic partnership, according to the U.S. Embassy.  General McKenzie and his interlocutors reportedly emphasized shared commitment to continuing close cooperation between the U.S. and Tajik security forces.
