Tajik leader proposes to set up Tajik-Afghan Working Council

On Monday March 29, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon met here with his Afghan counterpart Mohammad Ashraf Ghani. 

According to the Tajik president’s official website, the two sides discussed state and prospects of further expansion of bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and Afghanistan.

Their bilateral meeting was followed by an enlarged meeting with participation of the government delegations of both countries.  

The parties reportedly discussed issues related to bilateral cooperation between the two countries in energy sector, including construction of hydropower facilities, implementation of joint programs in energy sector, and implementation of the CASA 1000 project.  

They also pointed to the necessity of intensifying the work of the intergovernmental commission for trade and economic cooperation.

Tajik leader, in particular, proposed to set up the Tajik-Afghan Working Council.  

Besides, in the framework of cooperation in combating extremism and terrorism, the parties reportedly considered it appropriate to set up a joint commission for security and border control cooperation.

The meeting ended with signing of a number of cooperation documents.  

Emomali Rahmon and Mohammad Ashraf Ghani signed a Joint Declaration.

Besides, the parties signed a roadmap for cooperation in the fields of politics, security, commerce, transportation, transit, energy and culture.

They also signed the plan of actions in the framework of the agreement on cooperation between the interior ministries of Tajikistan and Afghanistan in combating terrorism, organized crime and drug in 2021-2022.  

The Committee on Terminology and Language of Tajikistan and the Academy of Sciences of Afghanistan in the field of terminology and language.  

The Accounts Chamber of Tajikistan and the Supreme Audit Office of Afghanistan signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the field of public sector audit.  

The Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Tajikistan and Afghanistan signed an agreement on establishment of the Working Council.
