On Thursday May 27, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan Tajikistan Takayuki Miyashita together with Ms. Firouza Nurullozoda, Deputy Mayor of Khujand City, attended the handover ceremony of successful completion of the Project for Construction of Rehabilitation Center for Children with Disabilities in Khujand City.  The ceremony was also attended by local officials, staff of the Center and community members.

According to Japan’s Embassy in Dushanbe, the project was implemented within the framework of Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).  The total grant amount of USD 88,515 was provided to the local government of Khujand City from the Government of Japan for construction of the center where children with disabilities will receive quality assistance and go through rehabilitation procedures.

Prior to the project implementation, children with disabilities needed a center for a long-term rehabilitation and other procedures.  The main purpose of this center is to increase the living standard of the children with disabilities as well as providing them high quality social services. Now, the Center provides the best environment for engaging around 500 children with disabilities in all types of physical therapy exercises as well as classroom for increasing their level of knowledge.

During the ceremony, Ambassador Miyashita made the following remarks, “I congratulate the citizens of Khujand City on the completion of the very first Rehabilitation Center for Children with Disabilities.  I highly appreciate the Tajik Government’s policy to protect and promote disabled people. In this regard, this Center has a symbolic meaning as well.  On behalf of the Government of Japan, we feel honored to take part at a journey with you together to the future, where everyone including disabled will work and live together happily.”

Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) is a scheme within Japan’s Official Development Assistance. GGP in particular implements grassroots-level projects in various sectors throughout Tajikistan.  Recipients of GGP grants include local governments, educational and medical institutions, and NGOs.
