Tajik President Emomali Rahmon today met in Moscow with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin ahead of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) summit.

According to the Tajik president’s official website, Rahmon called the meeting a good opportunity to discuss prospects of further expansion of bilateral cooperation between the two countries

The parties reportedly expressed satisfaction with the current level of bilateral cooperation between their countries.

They, in particular, noted that still there is considerable room for expansion of economic cooperation the two countries and pointed to the necessity of intensifying the work of the joint commission for trade and economic cooperation, the Tajik president’s official website says.

Rahmon and Putin reportedly also exchanged views on a number of regional and international issues being of mutual interest.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin says Putin noted at the meeting that Russia remains one of major trading partners of Tajikistan.

“Last year, the bilateral trade between the countries rose nearly 45 percent,” said Russian leader.  “Over the first three months of this year, the bilateral trade has risen more than 70 percent.  It is a good trend that needs to be maintained.  There are reasons associated with the current situation, but our relations are needed and are developing very actively.”

When discussing the situation in the region, the head of the Russian Federation called it difficult.

“Of course, we recently talked on the phone about the situation in the region, it remains difficult.  I am very interested to know your opinion on what is needed to strengthen our security in this direction,” Putin said.
